How Many Watts Does a Microwave Use?
Verified July 2026 Manufacturer + DOE typical ratings. Methodology
Microwave wattage by type
| Advertised power | Actual input draw | Energy per 5 minutes |
|---|---|---|
| 700W cooking (compact) | 1,050W | ~88Wh per 5 min |
| 1,000W cooking (standard) | 1,500W | ~125Wh per 5 min |
| 1,250W cooking (full-size) | 1,800W | ~150Wh per 5 min |
The microwave is a favorite outage appliance precisely because of its duty cycle: huge draw, tiny minutes. The catch is that the inverter must sustain the full input draw - 1,500W for a standard unit - which rules out sub-2,000W stations for anything bigger than a compact model. If your station can start a fridge and run a microwave (not simultaneously), you can eat hot food through a multi-day outage on surprisingly little battery.
How long real power stations run a microwave
Computed from each unit's rated capacity at 85% inverter efficiency and a 5% duty cycle (1500W running). Units that can't clear the start surge are excluded.

Why does my 1,000W microwave trip a 1,500W inverter?
Advertised wattage is cooking output; input draw runs ~50% higher (magnetron inefficiency). A 1,000W-cooking microwave pulls ~1,500W - right at the inverter's limit, and startup pushes past it.
How many microwave meals per kWh of battery?
About 8 five-minute heating sessions per 1,000Wh (125Wh each). Even a 1kWh station covers days of hot meals.
Microwave or hot plate during an outage?
Microwave, decisively - it heats food 3-4x more efficiently than a resistive burner, which matters when every watt-hour comes from a battery.
